1) CPT vs OPT: What’s the Difference?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT allows students to gain practical experience related to their field of study. This can include:
✅ Internships
✅ Co-ops
✅ Other training programs required by the academic curriculum

Key Rule: CPT must be approved by your university and is usually part of your study program.

Optional Practical Training (OPT)

OPT is temporary employment directly related to your field of study. There are two types:
Pre-completion OPT – Work experience gained during your studies
Post-completion OPT – Work experience gained after graduation

Key Rule: Standard OPT allows up to 12 months of work authorization.

2) STEM Students Get More Work Opportunities

If you’re studying a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) program, you have an advantage!

✅ F-1 students in STEM-designated programs can apply for a 24-month OPT extension, giving them a total of 36 months of work authorization.

Check if your major is on the STEM-designated list for additional work benefits.

3) On-Campus Jobs: The Easiest Work Option

International students can work on-campus without additional government approval. Here’s what you need to know:

✔️ You can start applying for on-campus jobs 30 days before your classes begin.
✔️ You must maintain an active F-1 student status.
✔️ Your job must be approved by your school’s Designated School Official (DSO).

Examples of On-Campus Jobs: Library assistant, research assistant, barista, IT support, and more!

4) Off-Campus Jobs: CPT and OPT Authorization is Required

Working off-campus is possible, but you must meet these conditions:

✔️ Completed at least one full academic year of study
✔️ Job must be directly related to your field of study
✔️ Must be eligible for either CPT or OPT

Important: Off-campus work must also be approved by your DSO before you start working.

5) Work Hour Limits for International Students

⏳ While Classes Are in Session:
F-1 students can work up to 20 hours per week.

⏳ During Breaks (Summer, Winter, Holidays):
Students can work full-time (40 hours per week).

Important: Exceeding work hour limits can affect your visa status, so always follow the regulations.
